World Description: wiki 1 + wiki 2
HMD: ahoy.
History: it's so long i'm so sorry
Skills/Abilities:
Hoo boy. Here's the wiki entry on them, but let's have a list.
Medical expertise. Law not only attended an academy for medical science, but was also trained by his father, the best doctor in Flevance. He is a doctor and a surgeon, possessing immense medical knowledge, surgical skill and knowledge of pharmacology. With the help of his Devil Fruit, he can operate on multiple people at once, and can cut out bacteria, narcotics or other disease-causing particles. However, this doesn't mean he can heal someone completely: his abilities make him the best doctor there is in their world, but he is still bound to the laws of science. As an example, though he is able to treat Luffy's life-threatening wounds after Marineford, he states that if the wounds reopen, he won't be able to save him again. As another example, if someone were to be hit by a bullet, he would be able to cut them open and remove the bullet without issue, but the damage left by the bullet would still be there and would have to be treated normally, with cleaning and stitching and bandaging.
Physical abilities. These include superhuman strength, superhuman endurance, marksmanship, martial arts and swordmanship. The last of these is his preferred method of combat, in combination with his Devil Fruit: he wields a nodachi as tall as him and is very proficient in using it.
Strategy. Law basically lives and breathes plans. He is very crafty, clever and opportunistic; a master strategist. He knows when to be cautious and wait, and when to move. He makes backup plans to backup plans, such as swapping seastone chains with normal ones in Punk Hazard on the off chance he'd get caught. His plans have a tendency to be multi-layered, and even if his plans fail, he is usually capable of formulating new plans on the spot. Not only that, he uses the people he is allied with to their maximum usefulness, making sure their abilities are used where they are most useful, and that his plans take into account their strengths and weaknesses.
Haki. Out of the three types of haki, Law can use two: armament and observation. Armament seems to be his preferred type of haki, allowing him to turn his body as hard as steel, enough so to block sharp weapons from cutting him. He can also use observation haki, meaning he can sense people and how they are attacking.
Ope Ope no Mi.His Devil Fruit*, a paramecia type that allows him to create a spherical circle (ROOM) within which he can basically control everything at will. The sphrere's size can vary from a regular room to encompassing an entire mountain or a small city, but the latter depletes his life force as it's that hard to maintain.
Amputate. Law's most used attack, which is him basically cutting through anything he wants inside the ROOM that he creates. People he cuts stay alive, but their body parts are severed. Later on they can be reassembled, and the person won't have any physical evidence of it. Cutting through a person is not harmful and doesn't hurt, either. Inanimate objects are cut as normal.
Radio knife. Law charges his sword with electricity and cuts through/slashes someone. This attack prevents the reassembling of body parts for a while.
Shambles. Law's second most used attack, in which he can switch the places of two objects within the ROOM. A variety of this is his Personality transplant surgery, in which he switches the souls of two people, effectively swapping their personalities.
Takt. An object inside a ROOM can be levitated in a telekinetic manner.
Scan. Law uses his sword like an x-ray machine, except it allows him to see not only anything that might be wrong with a person's body (a hurt, illness, etc) but objects they are carrying.
Mes. Law can strike his opponent with his bare hand and expel their heart out of their body. The heart comes out encased in a glass-like cube, and leaves behind a cube-shaped hole in the opponent's chest.
Counter shock. Law places his thumb(s) on his opponent's chest and releases an electrical surge, like a defibrillator.
Gamma knife. His strongest technique: creating a short blade of pure energy and stabbing his opponent with it. It destroys the opponent's internal organs without leaving external wounds.
* = in his Devil Fruit, the one thing that should likely be nerfed is shambles. As his range means he can basically switch himself or someone else with something else within the ROOM, it basically amounts to teleportation. However, the larger the ROOM, the more exhausting it is for him, so I'm fine with restricting it to only the unlocked places, or within his line of sight.
Flaws/Weaknesses:
Devil Fruit. All Devil Fruit users are weak to water, in that in standing water they become weak and generally sink like a hammer. Seastone, which is a stone that feels like water, has the same effect, basically nullifying Devil Fruit powers entirely.
Hubris. Law has a tendency to be a little too sure of himself, confident in the plans he has made, so that whenever something doesn't go according to plan that throws him off. He knows that he is smart, and tends to assume he is smarter than most people, which makes him also try and do everything himself, since he thinks he's going to do things better than others.
Mental trauma. Law's background is Wildly Full Of Trauma, starting from his entire home country going through a government-sanctioned genocide after the people started dying of poison that the government incidentally knew about but didn't tell the people about it, his parents being shot in front of him and little sister burning alive, escaping the country underneath a pile of corpses, knowing that he only had three more years to live, and then making one (1) human connection and caring about one (1) person who then died saving him. So needless to say, losing someone he cares about is a major fear of his, and the horrors of literally everything that happened in Flevance are ones he'll remember forever.
Fear of failure. As Law basically spent his adult life planning for one single goal, his major fear is that of failure. Of course, he did succeed in Dressrosa, but not on his own, something that certainly weighs on him.
Stubbornness and selfishness. When Law decides on something, that is what he will do, no matter what... from anything as non-serious as fighting Marines because he's been told not to, to literally telling his allies to abandon him to basically certain death because he's decided their alliance was over. He will selfishly decide exactly what he wants to do and then proceed to do just that.
Cruelty and disdain. Law isn't someone who reacts to people with a lot of sympathy, which results in him not mincing words and speaking of things as they are, even if what he says is hurtful or rude. He is often openly antagonistic and mocks his enemies, appearing disdainful towards those he deems weak.
Inability to trust. Law has difficulties trusting people, even those he is working with: a part of this relates to hubris, as he believes he'll be able to do things better on his own. But another part is simply him being unwilling to trust others, perhaps for fear of being let down, or hurt — he doesn't disclose all of the plans he makes, only parts of them, and often ends up micromanaging those he works with or trying to supervise them so that they actually do what he thinks they should do. Of course, this also extends to emotional trust: Law doesn't get close to people, or trust them with his secrets.
"The end justifies the means". While Law does have a compassionate side to him, he often still acts with the belief that in achieving a goal, it should be done by whatever means necessary. If it means having to do things he hates, or cutting out a hundred hearts from pirates and sending them to the World Government... he'll do it, because the end result is worth it to him.
Cute animals. Look, everyone in One Piece needs at least one ridiculous weakness. Law's just happens to be cute, fluffy animals. This mostly shows in him being unable to be angry at anything cute and/or fluffy.
People he cares about. Most people Law truly loves are dead: his family, as well as Rosinante, or Cora-san as Law calls him. They continue to be his weaknesses, though, as insulting their memory is a surefire way to make him ruthlessly and violently angry, and he would do literally anything to protect any of them. Other people he cares about are his crew, as well as Luffy and to a lesser extent the rest of the Straw Hats. As captain, it is his job to protect his crew, and for example he offers himself as a prisoner in exchange for their freedom. He feels indebted to Luffy for Dressrosa, and as an allied captain he feels somewhat responsible for the safety of the Straw Hat crew. He would act for all of them, even if it meant endangering himself.
Personality:Instead of the usual pirate quality of being rash and quick to act, Law is more of an observer than someone to take immediate action: for example, he has no immediate hurry to head to the New World, as he believes it’s better to let the other pirate crews to fight each other than engage in pointless battles himself — in other words, his approach to most things is largely opportunistic. Tied to this are also his planning abilities: he is intelligent and patient, capable of making long-term plans and spending years to put them in motion. He doesn’t act before he has planned what to do — and then made at least a few backup plans — and he is willing to go to great lengths to ensure that his plan isn’t interrupted. A part of this is the willingness to do things he otherwise wouldn't: joining the Warlords and thus working for the World Government that he loathes, and working together with Caesar Clown, who he finds a truly evil person. If it's for the sake of his plan, Law is able to put aside his own feelings and morals.
Law's thirteen-years-in-the-making plan to defeat Doflamingo represents many of his most important characteristics: loyalty, single-minded perseverance and stubbornness. He dedicates thirteen years of his life to one single goal, fulfilling Rosinante's mission, a goal he decides on out of love and loyalty to the man who saved his life in more ways than one. All his actions are to the achievement of that one goal that he always keeps in his mind, and in pursuing it Law shows single-minded determination and an unwillingness to give up no matter what, and to achieve it he's willing to sacrifice everything, including his life.
In general, Law is a serious person, rarely smiling or laughing and especially when contrasted with his allies, the Straw Hats, he's rather the "only straight man" in the dynamic — he hates being laughed at. He's often berating his allies and telling them to take things seriously, or sitting out of the way of the mayhem and ridiculousness of others. For most of the time, he appears unfazed, composed and sure of himself — he isn’t one to crack jokes or relax when the time doesn’t call for it, just as he isn’t one to rush headlong into new things when there is the option to fall back and watch things unfold. However, he does get surprised and angry when things don’t go the way he has planned, and he especially hates being ordered around or told what to do.
Law’s manner of speaking is a casual mix of blunt and sarcastic, as he has a tendency not to mince words: for example, he tells Luffy not to thank him as he only saved him on a whim. He doesn't really do "nice" — his interactions with people are straight, to-the-point, often with an undercurrent of annoyance or exasperation if things aren't going his way. He's not the kind of person to try and make someone feel better, or say empty words of comfort; instead, he speaks of things as they are, often ending up appearing as rather rude as a result. This is partly because he really couldn't care less what people think of him, or how people see him... and he has no problem provoking those he does't explicitly need to have on his side and thus get along with.
Law is most well-known in the pirate world as the Surgeon of Death, known for his cruelty, which is demonstrated by for example him sending the hearts of a hundred pirates to the Marine HQ in order to become a Warlord. He is often quite heartless and unforgiving, especially in fights, toying with his enemies and manipulating the battlefield to his own advantage. However, he rarely kills his enemies unless he absolutely has to — funnily enough, his reputation as "creepy" comes from his power and the way he can cut and reassemble people while they are still alive, even though in reality Law's style of fighting is almost merciful as he tends to spare those he fights, never doing any permanent damage... unless his enemies are truly terrible people who he thinks deserve to die. A part of this is his profession as a doctor: as a result, he abhors needless murder.
Underneath it all, though, Law is actually rather kind and compassionate, with his own firm sense of right and wrong. He goes out of his way to sail all the way to Marineford in order to save Luffy and Jinbe from dying, he cures the kidnapped children of their fatal drug addiction in Punk Hazard, and in Zou the minks are all touched by the way he's worried about their safety. He may try not to show these qualities often, and doesn't like people thinking that he has them, but they are certainly there and often influence his actions.
How does your character generally get along with other people? This really depends entirely on whether Law wants to get along with someone or not. He's harsh and blunt by nature, and if he doesn't care to get along with someone, he will openly antagonize them. However, when he wants to get along with someone, or simply doesn't have anything to hold against them, he's civil, if serious, in his interactions. Most people he gets along with just fine — even if most of his interactions with people stay on the surface level. Furthermore, it's important to note that he's fully capable of ignoring his own feelings and opinions about people if he happens to need them. Even though he generally dislikes needlessly cruel people, he can work with someone like that if it's for a goal he's trying to achieve. Thus, for Law, "getting along" with people doesn't mean the same as liking them, or trusting them.
